Neuromyelitis Optica: Sensitivity and Specificity

Introduction: also known as Devic Disease. It is usually viewed as a subtype of multiple sclerosis only involving the optic nerve and cervical spinal cord. Most cases are relapsing, and the initial presentation may involve only one component of the syndrome.

Revised diagnostic criteria for NMO published in 2006 require optic neuritis, myelitis, and at least two of three supportive criteria:

* A contiguous spinal cord lesion on MRI extending three or more segments

* Initial brain MRI not meeting usual diagnostic criteria for MS

* Seropositivity for NMO-IgG

The sensitivity and specificity of findings for Neuromyelitis Optica are listed below. See the left navigation bar to change the display.

Pre-Test Probability (Prevalence): %. Post-Test Probability (Predictive Value): %. Switch to display mode.
**Note that calculating probabilities from more than one finding is inherently inaccurate because findings are not independent. (For example, using two positive findings that share a common pathogenesis is likely to overestimate the true probability.)
