Respiratory Syncytial Virus: Sensitivity and Specificity

Introduction: RSV causes bronchiolitis in small children and can also pose a significant threat to immunocompromised and elderly adults.

In children, RSV is the most common etiology of bronchiolitis. In one study, testing of 277 samples revealed 176 (64%) positive for RSV, 44 (16%) for rhinovirus, 26 (9%) for hMPV, 17 (6%) for Flu A, and none for Flu B. [PMID 18275439].
